For the performance of my composition 'generator', commissioned by Champ d'Action, at the Singel, march 2009, I created these sonic beachballs. The last movement of the composition consits of throwing these sonic beachballs into the audience. There are 6 of them, and they are controlled wirelessly using custom built USB-to-wireless controller circuits created by Christian Klippel. The keyboardist plays monophonic lines which are distributed over the 6 balls, while they are thrown around in the audience. This creates a spatial experience of the melodic material unlike any other speaker configuration, because the soundsources literally move around and can suddenly bump into or fall into the hands of an audience member, at which point that person is given the chance to decide what direction the soundsource should go next.
